EK1 Tool Guide: Setup, Flashing, and Troubleshooting

The EK1 is the handheld OBD2 flashing tool that makes remote tuning possible on the Kia Stinger and Genesis G70/G80. This guide covers what the device actually is, where to get one, how to connect it to your car, how reading and flashing works, and fixes for the most common hiccups.

What is the EK1?

The EK1 (from EK1 Tuning, ek1tool.com) is a handheld flashing device that plugs into your car's OBD2 port and reads and writes the ECU. Tune files are loaded onto a microSD card and flashed directly from the device — which means a tuner anywhere in the world can calibrate your car while it sits in your driveway. No dyno visit, no shop appointment, no removing your ECU.

At SleepyTuned, the EK1 is how the vast majority of our tunes get onto the car: remote flashing with the EK1 is free with any tune, while in-person flashing (DFW or Houston area) is a +$150 option.

One thing to be clear about: SleepyTuned does not sell or provide the EK1. It's a separate purchase from the device manufacturer, and your tune does not include one.

How to get an EK1

  1. Buy the device directly from the manufacturer — order an EK1 through the EK1 manufacturer's site.
  2. Create an account at ek1tool.com — this is where the Online Map Store and device services live.
  3. Register your device — follow our step-by-step guide: How to register your EK1 device.

Connecting the EK1 to your car

  1. Locate your OBD2 port (driver's footwell area on the Stinger and G70/G80).
  2. Plug the EK1 in with its OBD2 cable.
  3. Put the car in power mode — ignition on, engine off, all dash lights visible.

🔋 Strongly recommended: hook up a battery tender while flashing. A voltage drop mid-write is the easiest way to turn a routine flash into a headache.

Reading and flashing your ECU

Before your first tune flash, your ECU needs a Patch File from the EK1 Online Map Store — and Stinger owners also need a Recovery File. The files must be flashed in a specific order (Patch → Recovery → Tune on the Stinger; Patch → Tune on the Genesis — Genesis owners must not flash the Stinger Recovery File). The full file-by-file walk-through, including which files to download for your Calibration ID, lives in our remote tuning guide.

The flashing procedure itself is the same for every file:

  1. Copy the file into the Maps folder on the EK1's microSD card.
  2. Insert the SD card into the EK1 and plug the device into the OBD2 port.
  3. Turn on the car's power mode (ignition on, engine off).
  4. On the device, navigate to: Power Mode > Writing ECU > Select File.
  5. Choose the file and follow the prompts — the EK1 confirms when the write is complete.
  6. Move on to the next file only after the current one finishes.

Once your tune is on the car, your tuner will guide you through datalogging so the calibration can be dialed in — revised files are flashed the same way, via the SD card.

Troubleshooting FAQ

The Online Map Store doesn't have a Patch File for my Calibration ID. Your ECU calibration isn't supported yet. You'll need to read the ECU over bench cables and submit the file to the EK1 manufacturer — support is usually added in 1–2 business days. The bench harness is available from the EK1 manufacturer's site.

My EK1 is on old firmware. Update it through the manufacturer's procedure at ek1tool.com before flashing — old firmware is a common source of avoidable write issues.

The write failed or the car won't start after flashing. Stop — don't keep flashing files at it. The most common cause is files flashed out of order (or a Genesis flashed with the Stinger Recovery File). Double-check the order in the remote tuning guide, and if you're a SleepyTuned customer, open a support ticket from your dashboard so we can walk you through recovery.

Ready to put it to work?

The EK1 is the delivery mechanism — the tune is what wakes the car up. If you haven't picked one yet, BEF vs Custom Tune breaks down which fits your build, and every option lives on the tuning hub.
